Free 3rd grade math games

Third grade is the big multiplication year. These free games make times tables and division facts fun to practice, then go further: multiplying with the area model, 3-digit adding and subtracting, fractions with banana bread, and two-step story problems with groups and sharing.

πŸŽͺ Eight more ways to practice the same facts: Vine Swing, Ice Cream Tower, Present Surprise, Ski Lift, Penalty Kicks, Sing-Along, Planet Hop and Crown Jewels.

What kids practice

  • Multiplication and division facts up to 10 Γ— 10
  • Adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers
  • Multiplying a 2-digit number by breaking it into tens and ones
  • Fractions: what Β½, β…“ and ΒΌ mean, and comparing them
  • Two-step word problems

Try one together: 23 Γ— 4 with the area model

  1. Break 23 into 20 + 3.
  2. 20 Γ— 4 = 80.
  3. 3 Γ— 4 = 12.
  4. Add the parts: 80 + 12 = 92. So 23 Γ— 4 = 92.

Tips for parents and teachers

Matching school standards

These games line up with these Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

Questions parents ask

Should my 3rd grader know their times tables?

Most standards expect third graders to know all products of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of the year. A few minutes of daily practice, like the quick-fact games here, makes a big difference.

What is the area model?

It splits a multiplication into smaller boxes by place value β€” 23 Γ— 4 becomes 20 Γ— 4 and 3 Γ— 4 β€” and then adds the boxes. It shows why multiplication works and leads into long multiplication later.
