Free fraction games for kids In Banana Bread Bakery above, kids slice banana bread to see fractions. Choose 3rd grade to show, name and compare fractions, 4th grade to find equivalent fractions, or 5th grade to add and subtract fractions with different denominators.
Games on this page What kids practice What a fraction means: equal parts of a whole Comparing fractions like ⅓ and ¼ Equivalent fractions like ½ = 2/4 = 4/8 Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators (5th grade) Try one together: why does ½ = 4/8? Cut a loaf in half: 1 of 2 pieces is ½. Cut each half into 4 equal slices. Now there are 8 slices. The half you had is now 4 of those 8 slices. Same amount of bread, so ½ = 4/8. Tips for parents and teachers Always ask “are the pieces equal?” — fractions only work with equal parts. Bigger denominator means smaller pieces: ⅛ of a pizza is less than ¼. Cooking is fraction practice: let kids measure ½ cup and ¼ cup. Matching school standards These games line up with these Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:
3.NF.A.1 Understand a fraction 1/b as one part when a whole is split into b equal parts.3.NF.A.3 Explain equivalence of fractions and compare fractions.4.NF.A.1 Explain why fractions are equivalent, using visual models.5.NF.A.1 Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.Questions parents ask Why is ⅓ bigger than ¼? Both are one piece, but splitting a whole into 3 equal pieces makes bigger pieces than splitting it into 4. A bigger denominator means smaller pieces.
How do you find equivalent fractions? Multiply (or divide) the top and bottom by the same number. 2/3 × 2/2 = 4/6, so 2/3 and 4/6 are equivalent.
