What kids practice

  • The four steps: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down
  • Where to write each digit of the answer
  • Remainders: what’s left over
  • Dividing by 2-digit numbers (6th grade)

Try one together: 156 ÷ 4

  1. 4 doesn’t go into 1, so use 15: 15 ÷ 4 = 3. Write 3.
  2. Multiply and subtract: 3 × 4 = 12, and 15 − 12 = 3.
  3. Bring down the 6 to make 36. 36 ÷ 4 = 9. Write 9.
  4. So 156 ÷ 4 = 39. Check: 39 × 4 = 156 ✓
